Born and raised on a farm, Ross decided to move to Auckland to pursue his love for art by undertaking study as a graphic designer. Ross is also an experienced rugby player, having played for the Auckland rugby team from 1992 to 1995 before shifting to England where he spent the next five years as a professional rugby player. Ross also played for the Ireland international rugby team and participated in the 1999 Rugby World Cup. Today, Ross paints full time and is involved in the New Zealand rugby scene as a specialist coach and as a member of the current All Black coaching squad. Ross prefers to paint in acrylic and oils illustrating mainly New Zealand landscapes that capture the striking New Zealand light.
