01/ 30/ 03 Public Invited to See Cows Get Ready for Big Day Out

Kids, bovine fans and art lovers are invited to watch talented artists breathe life into a herd of cows at this weekend’s Cow Barn Open Day, which is part of CowParade Auckland.

The Cow Barn, an abode on the corner of Fort and Gore Streets, where more than 20 life-sized fibreglass cows have been designed, painted and whimsically transformed into art, will be open to the public for the first time this weekend, and every weekend throughout February from 11am to 2pm.

Live entertainment, a colouring-in competition, giveaways and prizes will be on offer as artists including Christine Cameron, and mum and son team Nancy and Andrew Defratis go about completing their bovine creations, Mooved, Crystal Cow and Steak Out for display around Auckland’s CBD.

CowParade organisers say the Cow Barn Open Days will appeal to a wide range of people, particularly families with young children.

"It’s an opportunity for the public get a taste for what’s involved in the world’s largest outdoor public art exhibition, and to witness the creativity of local artists," says Heart of City’s Marketing Manager Liz Smith.

When completed, the cows will join Buzzy Beef, JAFA, Team Moo Zealand, Art Decow and the other bovines already showing off their hides around Auckland City.

At the conclusion of the parade in April, the cows will be sold at a charity auction with the net proceeds benefiting the charity Youthtown.

The Cow Barn is located on the corner of Fort and Gore Streets, and will operate from 11am to 2pm every weekend in February.
