06/ 19/ 03 High-art cattle auction raises more than $140,000 for charity

Art collectors and cow lovers alike forked out more than $140,000 for charity in a competitive bidding frenzy at New Zealand's first ever CowParade cattle auction in Auckland last night.

The highest bid - $12,700 - was for "Cowtearoa", a 2m-long white cow followed by Dick Frizzell's "Pa Kow" which brought in $12,000 for the Youthtown charity.

As expected, cows representing kiwi icons proved popular with the approximately 250 bidders who turned out at the event. "Buzzy Beef", a bovine version of the classic kiwi children's toy, and "Colin McCowan" went for $8000 and $9500 respectively.

Notable cow buyers included celebrity couple Adam Parore and Sally Ridge, who bought Otis Frizell's "Art Decow". Two cows were sold prior to the auction with Jim Farmer QC taking the colourful "Rainbow Cow" to graze on his rural property.

Eighteen of the thirty-three cows that have been grazing Auckland's CBD for the past five months as part of the Auckland CowParade went under the hammer last night. Nine other cows will be auctioned online at from today.

"The level of interest these cows attracted was remarkable and the auction results have shown that the cows are appreciated as art," said Heart of the City (CowParade Auckland organisers) Marketing Manager Liz Smith.

Funds raised from the event will be used to purchase a new vehicle for Youthtown's After School Programme and to fund the purchase of new computers.

"We're delighted to have been associated with the climax of the six-month long CowParade," says Youthtown's Executive Director Jeremy Sutton-Pratt.
